Jewelry Care
Your Bucavi jewelry is made to be worn and loved. With a little care, it will keep its beautiful shine for a long time. Below you’ll find our best tips, plus specific advice for each material. Not sure what your piece is made of? You’ll find the material on each product page under the heading ''details''.
The golden rules
These tips apply to all our jewelry:
- Last on, first off. Put your jewelry on after your perfume, lotion and makeup, and take it off before you go to bed.
- Keep it dry. Take your jewelry off before showering, swimming, working out or doing the dishes. Soap, chlorine, salt water and sweat can dull the shine and wear down the plating over time.
- Wipe after wearing. Gently wipe your jewelry with a soft, dry cloth after each wear to remove skin oils and dust.
- Store it separately. Keep each piece in its gift box or a soft pouch, so it can’t scratch or tangle with other jewelry.
- Avoid harsh products. Never use bleach, cleaning sprays, abrasive cloths or toothpaste on your jewelry.
Care by material
316L Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is strong, durable and doesn’t tarnish, which makes it perfect for everyday wear. Our stainless steel jewelry is waterproof: you can wear it in the shower, at the gym and even in the sea.
- Rinse with fresh water after swimming in the sea or a pool, and dry it with a soft cloth.
- Clean with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap when needed.
- With gold plating? Our gold-plated stainless steel pieces are finished with a durable PVD coating that’s made for daily wear. To keep the gold looking its best for as long as possible, avoid perfume and harsh cleaning products directly on the jewelry.
925 Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is real, precious silver. Over time, silver can naturally darken when it comes into contact with air, moisture or skin products. This is completely normal and doesn’t mean your jewelry is damaged.
- Store your silver in an airtight bag or closed box to slow down tarnishing.
- Not plated? Use a special silver polishing cloth to bring back the shine.
- Plated with gold or rhodium? Don’t use a silver polishing cloth or silver dip. It can remove the plating. Follow the advice below instead.
14K Gold Plated
Our gold-plated pieces have a layer of real 14K gold over a sterling silver or stainless steel base. This plating gives your jewelry its warm golden glow, and with the right care it stays beautiful for longer.
- Clean only with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Gently wipe, don’t rub.
- Avoid perfume, hairspray and lotion directly on the jewelry. These wear down the gold layer faster.
- Take it off before washing your hands, showering or exercising.
- Like all plated jewelry, the gold layer can gradually wear with daily use, especially on rings and clasps.
Rhodium Plated
Rhodium is a precious metal from the platinum family. It gives your jewelry a bright, white shine and an extra protective layer that helps prevent tarnishing.
- Clean with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Don’t use silver polish or polishing cloths. They can wear away the rhodium layer.
- Avoid contact with chlorine, cleaning products and perfume.
- Over time, the rhodium layer can gradually wear on places with a lot of friction, such as the inside of a ring.
Cleaning your jewelry
When your jewelry needs a little extra care:
- Mix lukewarm water with a drop of mild, unscented soap.
- Dip a soft cloth in the water and gently wipe your jewelry. Don’t soak it, especially if it has stones.
- For small details, use a very soft (baby) toothbrush.
- Rinse briefly with clean water.
- Pat dry immediately and completely with a soft cloth before storing.
Please avoid: ultrasonic cleaners, jewelry dips, bleach and abrasive cloths on plated jewelry or pieces with stones.
Caring for stones
Many of our pieces feature sparkling cubic zirconia stones. To keep them shining:
- Wipe them gently with a soft cloth.
- Avoid soaking them in water, as this can loosen the setting over time.
- Protect them from hard knocks, for example during sports or heavy work.
When to take your jewelry off
- Showering, bathing and swimming
- Sports and the gym
- Sleeping
- Cleaning and doing the dishes
- Applying perfume, lotion or hairspray
- Going to the sauna
